Roy E. Shaffer, BF Goodrich Retiree
Roy E. Shaffer, 85, of Lorain passed away peacefully on
Sunday, March 6, 2011, under Hospice Care at the home of his son and
daughter-in-law, Mark and Doris Shaffer, following a brief illness.
Mr. Shaffer was born in Elkins, WV on December 26,
1925, the son of the late Austin E. and Dulcie M (nee Brown) Shaffer. He was
a graduate of Lorain High School, Class of 1944 and attended Lorain County
Community College.
He was a veteran of the United States Army-Air Corp
during WW II, receiving the American Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal and
the WW II Victory Medal. During his military service, he completed radio and
radar training school and was stationed in San Juan, Puerto Rico and
Georgetown, British Guyana, South America.
Mr. Shaffer was an accomplished weightlifter and
bodybuilder having won several titles including "Mr. Lorain County" and
"Lorain's Strongest Man." He often trained with former Olympic champions
Chuck Vinci, Johnny Terpak, and legendary weight lifting coach Bob Hoffman,
founder of York Barbell.
Mr. Shaffer was also a member of Believers Spoken Word
Tabernacle in Sheffield, where he would many times open the church services
in prayer. He enjoyed reading the Bible and loved sharing his faith with
others. He was a former deacon at First Baptist Church in Lorain, where he
was also the church treasurer and preached sermons in absence of the senior
pastor.
For over 20 years, Mr. Shaffer was a very dedicated and
active member of the VFW Post 1079 in Elyria. He volunteered many hours at
the Brecksville Veteran Hospital, giving speeches at local schools, and
providing services for the needy. As such, Mr. Shaffer was chosen "Veteran
of the Year" in 2009 receiving an honorary award from U.S. Congresswoman,
Betty Sutton.
He was a Senior Lab Technician with the former B F
Goodrich Chemical Plant in Avon Lake for 35 years, retiring in June of 1990.
He worked in the Latex Lab of the Tech Center developing new uses for Poly
Vinyl coatings, which he received several patents on.
Mr. Shaffer is survived by sons John P. Shaffer of
Sheffield Lake, Mark E. Shaffer (Doris) of Lorain, and daughter Mickey E.
Teleha of Amherst, grandchildren Alivia, Sonny, Angela, Jessica, and great
grandchildren Kayly, Jocelyn, Savannah, Felix, and Jessalyn
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by
his wife, Eileen A. (nee Haas) Shaffer in May of 2010, sister Louella Gainer
of Elkins, WV in 1999, and his step father Ralph Heald of Lorain in 1972.
Friends may call on Thursday, March 10, 2011 from 4-8
p.m. in the Schwartz, Spence, Boyer & Cool Home For Funerals, 1124 W. 5th
Street.
Additionally, friends may call Friday, March 11, 2011
from 10:00 a.m. until time of service at Boyer & Cool Home For Funerals.
Funeral Services will be Friday, March 11, 2011 at
11:00 a.m. at the funeral home, with Pastor Samuel Browning, associate
Pastor of Believer's Spoken Word Tabernacle officiating.
Burial will be at Ridge Hill Memorial Park Cemetery,
where he will rest beside his beloved wife.
Family suggest that memorial contributions may be made
