Dale H. Meredith

1927-2011

The Lord Jesus took Dales' hand and led him home on November 12, 2011 from the New Life Hospice after a brave battle with Leukemia. Dale, 84 was born and raised in Lorain, graduated from Lorain High with the class of 1945 A.

He served in the U.S Army in WWII in the 397th Railway Police Unit in Germany. Remaining in the service after the war, he was a player/manager of a baseball team that barnstormed around Europe.

After coming home from the service in 1947, Dale began his local sandlot career with Kirby Cleaners, Lawson Lumber, Lorain Glass and finished in Class A with Ed's Indians, as a right handed pitcher.

Dale also played basketball in the city leagues and later was the refree at games in the YMCA and county high schools.

He played softball with the Lorain Telephone Company, bowled with the service leagues and enjoyed golfing in the senior league. He was proud of his hole in one in June of 1997.

He was a member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, also served on the board for Salvation Army and was proud to be a bell ringer at Christmas with his fellow Lions. Dale belonged to the Lorain Lions for 33 years and also served as President. He whole-heartedly supported the clubs fund raising projects.

Dale was a member of the Senior Fellowship Club and was song leader in both clubs. One of his greatest joys was singing and his tenor voice was enjoyed by everyone.

He was a life long, faithful member of St. Johns United Church of Christ and held various offices and sang in the church choir for many years.

Dale was employed by Lorain Telephone Company for 40 years and retired in 1986 as manager of the Outside Plant Engineering Department.

He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Lois, (nee Molnar) Meredith, daughters, Lynette Rogers (David), Nancy Svat (Rick), and sons Mark and Scott (Sue) Meredith all of Lorain, four granddaughters Kimberly, Megan, Katelyn, and Morgan and grandson Kevin. Dale also had two step grandchildren and four great step grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents Henry Meredith; mother, Louise (Bischoff) Peters Meredith, sisters Geraldine Peters Toole (Tom), Jeanette Peters Brumback (Bud), infant brother, Raymond and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held at St. Johns United Church of Christ, 715 Reid Avenue, Lorain from 4 to 8pm on Tuesday November 15th. The Lorain Lions will conduct a memorial service in Dale's honor at 7:30 pm in the church.

The funeral services will be held at St. John's United Church of Christ on Wednesday November 16, 2011 at 10:30am with Rev. Phil Kunz, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be at Ridge Hill Memorial Cemetery with full military honors provided jointly by the American Legion Post 30 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 451.

The family suggest that memorial contributions may be made to the St. Johns United Church of Christ as desired.

To the family of Dale Meredith,

Our sympathy and thoughts go out to the family and especially to Nancy and Rick.  What a full life he must have experienced.  Did he work as a lineman for the telephone company back in the mid 60's.  I worked a summer job during college as a telephone lineman and remember a fellow on my "gang" named Dale.  Could this be your Dad, Nancy?
