Daniel R. Coates
Daniel R. Coates, 86, of Lorain passed away on
Friday, October 21, 2011 at the New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph
following a brief illness.
Mr. Coates was born in Lorain on August 28, 1925,
the son of the late Clarence D. Coates and Mary "May" H (nee Taylor) Coates
Shelton.
He was a graduate of Lorain High School, Class of
1943-B and the University of Miami in Florida in 1953 with a bachelor of
science degree in civil engineering. He served in the U.S. Navy during WW
II, earning the Victory Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Medal and the American Area
medal.
Mr. Coates was a member of Cornerstone United
Methodist Church in Elyria.
He worked as a civil engineer at Ford Motor Corp in Brookpark for 25 years: retiring in 1981. He worked previously for the US
Steel Co and American Shipbuilding Co.
Mr. Coates was a member of the American Legion Post
30, the NRA and AARP. He enjoyed photography, citizens ban radio and most of
all, spending time with wife and family including his dog Zoey. He was a
former Boy scout troop leader.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Beatrice M.
(nee Mason) Coates, daughters, Phyllis C. (Fay) Grose, of Lisbon, Sandra
(John) Lynn Kenzik of Lorain, son, Daniel R. (Susan J.) Coates, Jr, also of Lorain,
8 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
Friends may call on Monday, October 24, 2011 from
11:00 am until Funeral Services at noon in the Schwartz, Spence, Boyer &
Cool Home For Funerals, 1124 W. 5th Street, Lorain. The Rev. Dr. Bradley J.
Donahue, pastor of the Christian Temple-Disciples of Christ.
Burial will be in the Elmwood Cemetery with full
military honors provided jointly by the American Legion Post 30 and the VFW
Post 451.
The family suggest that memorial contributions may
