Margaret J. Cook

Margaret J. Cook,  92 (nee Guest) of Oberlin passed away on Sunday, May 17, 2009  in Kendal at Oberlin after living a full and wonderful life.

Born in Detroit, MI on July 28, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Margaret (nee Andrew) Guest. Predeceased by her husband, Dan K. Cook (1976), and three brothers, she is survived by her four children Patricia (John) Morrisson of Lorain, Daniel A ( Mary Jo) Cook of Vermilion, Martha C (William) Piper of Vancouver, British Colombia, Canada,  John P. (Catherine) Cook of Wooster, seven grandchildren, Christopher Cook, Skip Morrisson, Jeffrey Cook, Margaret Dresing, Emily Piper-Elgie, Cynthia Morrisson, Hannah Piper, 12 great grandchildren, her  sister Barbara Miller of Monroe, MI, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A graduate of the University of Michigan (1938), she was a resident of the Lorain area since 1940 and was an active member of the First Congregational Church, Lorain.   Margaret was a full-time wife, mother and grandmother, making her family her number one priority.  Nevertheless she found time to give generously to her community, acting as a leader and volunteer of the Girl Scouts of Northeast Ohio and serving as President of the Board of the Neighborhood House Association.

Known for her wit and wisdom, her intellect and curiosity, her love of literature and poetry, her appreciation of nature and all things living, her knowledge of the contemporary world and historical events, she was actively engaged in life right up to the time of her passing. While Margaret was blessed in all aspects of her life, she never forgot her roots and her devotion to family.   She was an extraordinary mother and grandmother, providing moral direction, values, purpose and meaning to all of their lives.  She was loved dearly and will be greatly missed by all of her children and grandchildren.

A Celebration of Mrs. Cook's life will be held on Sunday, May 31, 2009 at 3:00 pm at Kendal of Oberlin with Rev. Carl Richter, pastor of the First Congregational Church, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to the First Congregational Church, 423 Washington Street, Lorain, Ohio 44052; Community Foundation of Greater Lorain County, 1865 North Ridge Road E, Ste A, Lorain, Ohio, 44055; Girl Scouts of Northeastern Ohio,  6111 S. Pat,
So sorry to read about your mother's passing.  I know how difficult that can be but it seems as if she had a very full life.

We send our deepest sympathy to the entire Cook family on the loss of your Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother and Sister.  She truly was a very special "Lady".  Stan has many great memories of sleepovers, etc. at the COOK home.

With love,
Stan and Nancy

I have such fond memories of Gram, especially summertime-mowing her yard and getting Kool Aid in exchange.  I'm sure Skip has/had that very influential relationship with her as I did with Bap.  Thank God for memories that never leave us.

She is the end of an era.  It was like a long-running television series, and she was the matriarch of a dynamic family that was always in the midst of one fascinating episode or another.  A select few of us beyond that family had an opportunity to partake, as extras, or minor cast, or simply as spectators.  The era is over, but still, there she is in my memory, the dynamic family’s quiet matriarch, ending each scene with one of those lightning-fast gently acerbic ironic quips that defined only her surface.  Now she rests, but we are all somehow better for having encountered her strong deep spirit.

Dear Cook Family,

Some of my fondest memories of Lorain are of the Cook family in action, with Mrs. Cook at the helm. If we forgot to bring a bathing suit she suggested the pile of unfashionable ones in the cardboard box-one size fits all variety. She wittily monitored Martha's Tuesday "beauty night" sleep-overs without interference.
My sincerest condolences to all of the Cook children who are certainly carrying on wonderful family traditions.
