Virgil Lawrence Hume
Virgil Lawrence Hume, 91, of Juno Beach, FL passed away on May 9. He was
born in Lorain, OH, on April 23, 1917.
He graduated from Carnegie-Mellon University in Engineering in
1939.
He served in WWII in 83rd Infantry Division (Engineering)
in Normandy, Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe. He received five
medals and five bronze stars.
Mr. Hume was President of TJ Hume Construction Company in Lorain,
builder of various schools, hospitals and industrial projects.
During his lifetime, Mr. Hume served in Kiwanis, YMCA, and other
charitable organizations in Ohio and Florida. He was a lifelong member of
Kappa Sigma fraternity.
He was an avid golfer and past president of Elyria Country Club.
He was married for 67 years to Jane L. (nee Rose) Hume, a native of
Niles, OH.
He is survived by his wife, and three children, John David Hume of
New Albany, OH; Janet Hume Smith of Calgary, Canada, and Marti Hume Ruel
of Hermosa Beach, CA. He is also survived by sisters Virginia Miller of
Amherst and Helen Woodward of Sheffield Lake. He has six grandchildren:
Alex Hume; Nathan, Nicki, Chelsea, and David Smith; and Sabra Ruel.
He is preceded in death by parents Thomas J. and Blondina (nee
Burgett) Hume, brother Elmer T. Hume and sisters Geraldine Miraldi and
Rita Hume.
The family will receive friends and relatives on Saturday, May 17,
2008 from 3 to 5 PM at the Schwartz, Spence, Boyer & Cool Home For
Funerals, 1124 W. 5th Street, Lorain, Ohio 44052.
The family suggest that memorial contributions may be made to the
charity of the donor’s choice in Virgil’s memory.
