 Earl W. Woodings

Earl W. Woodings, 79 of Lorain passed away on Thursday, July 6, 2006, at Kingston of Vermilion following a long illness.
     Mr. Woodings was born in Elyria, OH on March 11, 1928, and lived in this area all his life. He was a graduate of Lorain High School, Fenn College nka, Cleveland State University with a bachelor of education and Case Western Reserve University with a master's degree with a specialty in reading.
     He was an US Army veteran assigned to the 8th Army Headquarters and served most of his time in Japan as a sergeant. Although Earl was initially assigned to the artillery, he became involved in military intelligence operations in Japan. His primary responsibilities involved the inspection of Japanese factories as postwar production capabilities were being reestablished-ensuring that the factories were conforming to US rules and restrictions. Upon returning stateside, he began working at NASA. IN 1950 he again enlisted in the military and was assigned to the NASA lab. His security level lead to a number of late night assignments chauffeuring US spies and agents to secret drop-off locations.
     Mr. Woodings began his teaching career as an elementary school teacher, then as a school principal. He was principal at Larkmoor, Emerson, Jane Lindsey, Masson and Longfellow Schools.  He then became the Director of Secondary Education for the city schools and was responsible for 5 junior high schools and three high schools. After an education career that spanned 4 decades, he retired in 1983.
     He was a member of the Delaware Avenue United Methodist Church. He had been active in the First Presbyterian Church and attended the former Northminster Presbyterian Church.
     Mr. Woodings was a member of the Mid-Century F & AM Lodge # 725 in Avon Lake, Scottish Rite Valley of Cleveland, Order of Eastern Star-Queen City Chapter # 66 and the American Legion Post # 30. He had been active in the Al Koran Shrine, Scottish Rite Hillbillies and the High Twelve.
     He enjoyed photography, music, made furniture, created leaded glass window ornaments, carving duck decoys, and 30 years of camping and fishing with his family.
     Mr. Woodings is survived by daughters Lynn Woodings of North Ridgeville and Stuart, FL, Connie Harrell of Huntington, IN, brother  Albert L. Woodings of Lorain and one granddaughter.
      He was preceded in death by his wife Arlyne R. (nee Kindelberger) in 1994 and his parents Albert  J and Caroline (nee Cheetham) Woodings.
     Friends may call on Sunday, July 9, 2006, from 2-6 PM at the Schwartz, Spence, Boyer & Cool Home For Funerals, 1124 W. 5th Street, Lorain, OH 44052. Masonic services will be at 5:00 PM at the funeral home.
     A celebration of his life will be on Monday, July 10, 2006, at 10:30 AM in the funeral home with Rev. James E. Smucker, pastor of Heritage Presbyterian Church,  officiating.
     Burial will be in the Ridge Hill Memorial Park Cemetery with full military honors provided jointly by American Legion Post 30 and AmVets Post # 451.
